HubPages vs. Squidoo – My Take on These Web 2.0 Properties
Posted by KristiSep 2
There seems to be a bit of a hot debate between Hubbers and Lensmasters about which one is the better platform. Hubbers tend to think that Hubs far outrank Lens by Lensmasters and so forth. Well, I believe that each one has their place and both can be used for increasing traffic and creating some very strong back links. A couple of months ago, I did an informal test on both platforms and I created a bunch of lenses and hubs in order to see which one worked the best for my purposes. I also did a bit of back linking to each one and pinged them too. In essence, I half followed the advice of Pot Pie Girl in One Week Marketing (not because it wasn’t good but because I was lazy). Anyway, here are the results of my findings:
Lens:
48 lenses created, average score 3, views 81, money made $.64
Hubs:
71 Hubs created, average score 64, views 2408 money made $6.11
Now when evaluating my findings, keep in mind that I typically targeted the same keywords for both platforms but not always. In fact, once I saw that more pages were getting indexed and more views on HubPages, I sort of lost interest in Squidoo. So, for me, HubPages seems to be the clear winner in my somewhat skewed experiment. Not only did I earn more money from HubPages but I also received more views for my efforts too. I think this is because the pages got ranked faster and without much effort. I also felt a sense of friendliness and willingness to help one another at HubPages. Lastly, I really loved the way it was set up and the ease of putting together Hubs.
So, in the future, I will continue to use both platforms for my back linking strategy but I am going to concentrate more heavily on HubPages for their monetization potential. I also plan to utilize the recommendations of Pot Pie Girl in One Week Marketing to see if I can increase the visibility of my Hubs and my income. However, I also need to increase my HubScore to 75 so that my linked sites can also enjoy the value of the links. Right now, my links are no follow and will remain this way until I get my HubScore to 75 or over so, I’ve got a bit of work to do. But, the way that I look at it, any platform that helps get you traffic and make a little coffee or bumble gum money is a good thing.

I have also noticed that Hubpages get more organic traffic than Squidoo lenses, both from Google and Yahoo. Have you noticed the same?
Another site that is working for me almost as well as Hubpages is Xomba. You can find it at http://www.xomba.com and I would highly recommend giving it a try with a few articles. The rules are fairly relaxed and you can link directly to some, but not all, affiliate pages. Sites such as Amazon are accepted while they frown on links to Clickbank products. You can get around that by using a redirect link. It would be well worth knocking up a few articles and tracking how many responses you get from the increasing number of members at Xomba. The only down side is, somewhat like Craigslist, the most recent posts get a far better response so it may be worth updating the articles from time to time. Do not, under any circumstances, remove the articles and re-post them as you would do on Craigslist because Google will index the articles as they would an EzineArticles post and Google can get a little snaky if you remove it after they have indexed it. I have found Xomba to be as reliable as EzineArticles when it comes to long-term backlinks.

Sounds like a good plan. I personally prefer Hubpages more than Squidoo because, just as you have mentioned, there is a sense of friendliness and desire to help fellow hubbers.
Colin, I actually use Xomba a lot and average about $20.00 or so a month from simply bookmarking my various articles and writing a few snippets (smaller articles) ever so often. I actually might do more of this in the future. Thanks for the reminder about Xomba!

Bookmarking on Xomba is quick and easy and will inevitably produce some results. I use their article directory often and would use the bookmarks about half as much. The only reason for that is a short article will “presell” a product/idea/concept and I attain a higher CTR from preselling. The power of suggestion is a beautiful thing, and a handy tool.

Yes Colin, pre-selling is a very good thing indeed! I read somewhere that it takes someone 7 times to see something before they are ready to buy it. Would it be nice if you were the one tooting the message 7 times with your site, blog, Squidoo lenses, Hubs, Xomba blurbs, Ezine Articles, ArticleBases article, etc?

Hello Kristi. Thank you for this face to face review of Hubpages and Squidoo. I am not a member yet of the two, but I am planning to join them to have exposure for my blog. I am not for the profit I will earn if I join but to share my ideas to more people. Your post will help me a lot.
