There are two ways to look at this question. One would be to consider the need for attention vis-a-vis the need to know. Obviously Facebook is like a peeping Tom into the lives of people you know personally and who have allowed you access to their accounts. Twitter, on the other hand, does not require you to know the other person personally. You could be a fan or a interested follower.
If you are going to choose one over the other to promote your business, I recommend that you go with Twitter because it has a wider reach. However, if you want to socialize and have a more intimate relationship with your readers, stick to Facebook.
From a different perspective, it’s not that easy to find and hold on to Twitter followers. Unlike Facebook, there is no emotional bond with others. Just think about it, if you ask your family, friends, relatives to be your friend on Facebook, they’ll do it because of emotional blackmail. And they won’t dare remove you unless they want to start World War 3. This emotional tie will hold you and keep your bound for a long time.
With Twitter however, you’ve got to work hard to get followers. You have to post interesting tweets so people would want to follow you and then you have to keep them interested. For instance, let’s say that you are trying to market your coupon blog and you want to direct readers to your discounted Garnier Fructis Coupons. Well, you can’t simply post some boring tweets that say, get your Garnier Fructis Coupons here. Instead, you must be more creative and say, “Even models refuse to pay salon prices for beautiful hair. Discover their secrets” or “Stop making your hairstylist rich and make everyday a good hair day with Garnier” and then you’d link to your coupon site.
That said, it is entirely up to you which one to use – each one has its pros and cons. I recommend that you use them both! That’s what I do!
