Yes, it is true – I’ve only been on Twitter for a while now. Since twittering, I’ve noticed an increase in the visitor’s to imwriterblog and have meet some very interesting folks. So, I wanted to give everyone a few tips about obtaining QUALITY Twitter followers and how to get more of them.

Now, mind you that I’ve just started implementing this plan but I went from 0 targeted followers to over 25 in just 4 days and I didn’t have to follow a bunch of untargeted people to make this happen. Plus, I grew this list without using any black-hat or manipulation techniques whatsoever.

I only expect this number to grow and grow.  Here are some People on Twitter Rules that you must follow to get targeted followers:

1.     Create a professional Twitter background profile and add a logo or picture also. This will set you apart from the spammers and really help you get noticed and taken seriously.  Check mine out here.

2.     Put your Twitter ID on your website (widgets work great) and on your business cards, email signatures, whatever. In essence, get your Twitter ID out there for everyone to see.

3.     Follow the big players in your industry and then follow those people who are following them.   Also, start following people that you are interested in learning more about. You can even use tools to search for people by keyword and then follow them using those keywords. (http://search.twitter.com/) Don’t follow too many people at a time. Instead, focus on 50-100 targeted leads.

4.     Tweet often. OK, you don’t have to tweet like every second but sending a few quality posts not only signifies that you are not a spammer but it also makes people want to follow you so that they can read more.  For instance, let’s say you have a site that teaches people how to avoid foreclosure. Well, you need to creative valuable tweets about avoiding the foreclosure process and make sure that you submit them on a regular basis. In fact, 1-2 per day would not be excessive.   You can even use Social Oomph, a free service, to automate the process a bit.

5.     Once you follow someone, review their recent tweets. Immediately unfollow people if they seem to be too promotional and if they are not offering any value.

6.     If you’re concerned with increasing your numbers, you can also unfollow people who don’t follow you back. But, I think it looks more natural to have a good balance of people you follow and those that follow you. You don’t want to be seen as the person who follows people simply because they follow you, do you?

Well, these are my official People on Twitter rules  that I’m implementing right now and I’ll add to this list as I figure out more tips and tricks. And for any of you that have additional tips, please feel free to share them.

So today I took the Twitter plunge and I must say that I have absolutely NO idea what I am doing with twitter. It is like a whole new world out there and I don’t have a clue about any of this.  I mean, I know what twitter is and have seen it on other internet marketer pages and have heard that it is a great way to get traffic but I still don’t have a clue as to how or why someone would need to twitter all the time.

The reason I didn’t join Twitter earlier is because I was lazy and didn’t feel like learning about it. I simply didn’t see the value in it and honestly didn’t see how it could possibly help me get my name out there. But, today, I decided that maybe it  was time to make the time. Maybe it was time to get active, time to spread the word about my journey and time to get serious about my mission of educating other writers about the possibilities of internet marketing. And, I figured that twittering was one of the best ways to do it so I joined and wrote a post. Check out my profile and let me know what you think.

Now, I just have to figure out how all this Tweeting stuff works and I have to do it without spending  a ton of time figuring it out. There is so much to learn – about widgets, client software, and all that jazz. Then, I have to figure out how to follow people, how to get them to follow me and what to say when they do. This tweeting thing might take more time than I thought. Oh well, I guess Rome wasn’t built in a day and building my reputation on Twitter will take some time too.

One thing is certain – I will keep you all informed about my latest Tweeting episodes.
